So You Want to Be a Consultant…

Screen Shot 2014-06-13 at 3.26.50 PMThinking back over the past six years since we launched The FlexPro Group, I can’t help but think, that Lynn and I were really on to something! As we state on our website, “Through our own experiences, we realized what an ideal option it was for professionals such as ourselves to work in a flexible work arrangement, yet continue to engage in challenging and rewarding work. Others kept saying that they wanted what we had. We wanted them to have the same opportunity.”

I’m a big believer that life is all about options and choices. This not only applies to your personal life but also to your career. The reality of the past six years is that the job market has let a lot of people down with many of them scrambling to find new jobs. I think we all know someone who has suffered a job loss as a result of corporate downsizing or similar circumstance. I’ve known people that this has even happened to more than once. There comes a point where you start to wonder if there could be another option?

For those that have enjoyed success in consulting, I’ve found them to have the following traits:

  • They enjoy variety and embrace change.
  • They are ok with a certain level of ambiguity and risk.
  • They value their flexibility (in schedule, when/how they work).
  • They have a large network of contacts.
  • They are business-savvy (financials, marketing, business trends, etc.)

If this sounds like it could be you, consulting can be a very viable and lucrative career option. While you may think of it as the “road less traveled”, it’s seeing more traffic these days, and consulting is a career option that you can choose now!
