Take Action – “Just Do It!”

August 11, 2013 by Lynn Faughey

The back-to-school time of year always reminds me a little of the New Year. How many of us start making resolutions over the summer, “once the kids go back to school, I’ll __________.”  Fill in the blank! With both of my kids now off to college I can actually consider implementing some of the great ideas I’ve had all summer. I love watching the cooking shows on TV, so it might be fun to take a cooking class or make plans to cook with a friend and try some new recipes. Regardless, I plan to do SOMETHING to get my culinary pursuits off the ground. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Part of the adventure of taking on a new challenge, whether personal like a hobby, or professional like a career change, is knowing there will be bumps in the road along the way that will require some “course correction”. This is all part of the learning experience, and anyone who knows me well knows I thrive on continually learning and trying new things.

In a recent Inc. article on the top 10 motivational books of all time, I was inspired by what Norman Vincent Peale says in his book The Power of Positive Thinking, “Action is a great restorer and builder of confidence. Inaction is not only the result, but the cause, of fear. Perhaps the action you take will be successful; perhaps different action or adjustments will have to follow. But any action is better than no action at all.”
Because we saw a need and after much discussion regarding the pros and cons of starting a business, Rose and I decided it was time for action. FlexPro was born in 2008, looking very different from the way it looks today. We started out with a focus on consulting for companies who were looking for people with Engineering and Science backgrounds. Realizing this may be a bit too broad we had to make adjustments to our business model. Seeing a niche that needed to be filled, we narrowed our focus to supply chain in the pharma industry while continuing to pursue other avenues that would help grow our business. Changing with the times is critical to any business success, and most recently we recognized it was time to revamp our business plan again in order to satisfy a greater demand for consulting services in Project Management. This past month we re-designed and re-launched our website, www.theflexprogroup.com emphasizing a greater focus on this area.

For me, one of the most exciting parts of running a successful business is the constant need to change things up. We are lucky to be a product of our own success, and with that success comes the need to re-adjust, re-evaluate and take action. The tremendous growth we’ve experienced has allowed us to institute a 401(k) retirement plan with a company match and health benefits for our employees. Neither of these are areas we ever considered early on, but we’re proud to now be able to offer both to our employees.

As Rose and I can attest to, it’s a little scary to try something new, venture out of that comfort zone and “just do it”,  but it’s important to realize that doing something not so perfectly is better than doing nothing at all!
